Only a Morning Person for Sunrise
Now, I’m not a morning person, but if I’m getting up to watch the sunrise: LOOK OUT. You mean I get to watch the sun peek out over the horizon and greet me personally? I’m up and ready to go.
I had no idea what the rising sun and ocean were about to create together that morning. I just set up my camera, watched and let my thoughts and senses flow.
P.S. These are real notes I took in my notes app on my phone that morning.
I named this collection Show for One because that morning felt like the sun and sea were putting on a private little magic show. I only saw it because I stopped long enough to watch. Had I kept walking down the beach, I would have missed these intimate moments entirely.

Things I Couldn’t Stop Thinking About
If you stick around here long enough, you’ll learn that one thought tends to lead me to another. Watching this sunrise was no exception. Here are a couple of the rabbit holes it sent me down.
-
The first thing that popped into my head when I saw the sun that morning was “Hello Mr Sun.”
Then, because my brain apparently has to question EVERYTHING, I started wondering why I had called the sun “Mister.” The sun felt masculine to me, while the moon felt feminine.
Later that day, I learned that the Mayans also associated the sun with masculine energy and the moon with feminine energy. And I was standing in a place where the Mayans had once lived.
I LOVE moments like this. It felt serendipitous, like one of those little reminders that I’m connected to something much bigger than myself.

When the sun finally reached over the horizon, it almost looked like a giant eye emerging in the distance. For a moment, it felt like I wasn’t only looking at the sun, but like the sun was somehow looking back at me.
I’ve always felt something similar when I look at the stars, like somehow they’re looking back at me too. Their vastness makes me feel incredibly small, but somehow still part of something much bigger.
And then I had this very obvious but kind of mind-blowing realization:
The sun is a star.
The same feeling I had always found under the night sky was right there in front of me at sunrise. A STAR was rising over the ocean right in front of me. That still kind of blows my mind because, even though I obviously knew the sun was a star, I had never actually felt like I was looking at a giant star while watching the sun.
And I got to watch it RISE!
So when I look at these photographs now, I don’t just see a pretty sunrise. I see a reminder of how incredible this world is when we actually stop and LOOK at it.
